Even though it is still winter, it is time to consider tree pruning and tree removals. Although removals can be done anytime of year, tree pruning should be done in the fall and winter months. So why should you be worried about removals during tree pruning season? Well, simply put, you will save money. It is far more efficient for our tree crews to complete both pruning and removals in a single trip; the pricing will reflect it. For instance, a single Canary Island Pine (Pinus canariensis) is trimmed as part of a large group of trees (40 or more). The approximate unit price would be $95.00 – $110.00 when it’s pruned with a large group of trees, as opposed to the unit price of $300.00 – $325.00 for that same tree to be pruned on its own. The same principles apply to tree removals as well. Several single trees that have been marked for trimming and removal can be combined to form one large group to be completed at one time, at a significantly lower cost per tree. This is why you should consider removing trees at the same time others are being pruned.

We strongly urge that you consider having a tree-pruning planner made now. The tree-pruning planner is an extremely helpful tool that will allow you to plan pruning and budget for the pruning over a three-year period. The planner gives a breakdown of tree species, the quantity of each species and the cost to prune each species. The largest benefit provided by the tree planner however is tree health. By pruning on a pre-determined calendar, tree growth can be managed and tree health will improve, it’s much like going to the dentist and having your teeth cleaned.

All of the tree care techniques we utilize are the techniques recommended by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). We currently have two arborists on staff, both, have been certified by the ISA, and are responsible for the training of all tree crew workers employed by Harvest Landscape.

Failure Reduction (FR):
One major purpose for pruning is the reducing the risk of failure. Tree failure is particularly dangerous when the trees are growing near streets and structures, as they have the potential to cause severe damage. By utilizing a structural pruning plan, the risk of failure due to canopy weight and wind resistance. Structural pruning is the removal of live branches and stems to influence the orientation, spacing, growth rate, strength of attachment, and ultimate size of branches and stems. Structural pruning helps engineer a sustainable trunk and branch arrangement.

Reduction of Shade and Wind Resistance (RS):
Although we all like to have shade, especially during the summer months; too much shade can be a detriment to the ground shrubs and plants below, as well as, the foliage inside the crown of the tree. When the foliage of the tree crown is too dense light and wind does not penetrate into the inner foliage of the tree, which can lead to poor tree development. In regards to wind, when a tree’s crown is too dense, the wind resistance of the tree is greatly increased and can lead to broken limbs, cracks in the trunk, and stress on the tree.

Maintain Tree Health (MH):
The health of the tree can be maintained by cleaning the crown, especially in medium-aged and mature trees. During crown cleaning, dead, diseased and rubbing branches are removed, which in turn, decreases the risk of spreading disease, decay, falling branches, and introduction of disease from dead and dying branches to the rest of the tree. This is the recommended type of trimming for mature trees since living branches are mostly avoided.

Save your community money, ask to have all tree pruning and removals performed at the same time. Have a tree-pruning planner made. Should you need a proposal for removals, a proposal for pruning, or a three-year planner for pruning, please feel free to contact our office at anytime. Please remember, the more tree services we are able to perform at once, the more you save.
